This year, the theme of Hong Kong Pride is: Step Out for All, Show Up With Pride.<\/span><\/p>

From the moment we are born, through childhood and into who we become, each of us slowly uncovers a piece of ourselves that sets us apart. Perhaps it’s who we love, how we express our gender, the identity we hold close, or the values we live by. For LGBTQ+ people, coming out is a chapter written into every life story, a journey both singular and shared. Yet humans long to belong, and to escape judgment for standing outside the norm, many of us learn, quietly and without meaning to, to soften our edges and hide the parts of us that shine brightest.<\/span><\/p>

But no one can wear a borrowed face forever. Somewhere along the road, our truest self finds its way to the surface.<\/span><\/p>

And so, coming out becomes a chapter none of us can skip.<\/span><\/p>

Coming out doesn’t have to mean baring your whole self to the world all at once. Some people confidently live as their authentic selves, wearing their identity with pride. Many more may only feel safe being their true selves in front of close friends. Some can only open up to certain family members, while others feel most free only among those who understand without explanation. No path is more right or more whole than another, for every person carries a different story, and every family holds its own quiet chapters.<\/span><\/p>

When a society opens its arms wide enough for everyone to live as they truly are, everyone benefits. Communities grow steadier, relationships grow stronger, and hearts grow lighter. Building workplaces that welcome LGBTQ+ people and raising awareness around mental health lay the ground for stepping out to feel safer and softer.<\/span><\/p>

Every person who joins us helps pave a road for tomorrow, for the LGBTQ+ people who will walk this path after us, so they need not carry yesterday’s weight alone. Stepping out needs a road built together.<\/span><\/p>

Whether you’re one of the fortunate few who already live out loud and proud, an ally who champions freedom and equal rights, or someone who has simply had enough of prejudice and its quiet cruelty, let’s step forward together, hopeful for brighter days, at Hong Kong Pride 2026.<\/span><\/p>

Director Ray Yeung has created two acclaimed LGBT+ films, Suk Suk (2019) and All Shall Be Well (2024), garnering numerous awards and nominations. Both works have not only received recognition from local awards such as the Hong Kong Film Awards, All Shall Be Well was awarded the Teddy Award at the Berlin International Film Festival, the highest distinction in queer cinema. Yeung is a figure who has made significant contributions to both Hong Kong\u2019s film industry and the local LGBTQ+ community.<\/p>

Down-to-Earth Queer Narratives<\/strong><\/p>

Suk Suk and All Shall Be Well explore LGBTQ+ themes, yet avoid the conventions of aesthetic idealization and fresh-faced romance, refusing to paint stories of ethereal, tragic love affairs. Instead, they focus on elderly queer protagonists. Yeung\u2019s lens renders queer lives with striking groundedness\u2014he slips into his characters\u2019 worlds, capturing them as naturally as one would film the lives of everyday people. Elderly queer individuals should never be considered a niche subject, for we all grow old, and the experiences he portrays reflect the authentic realities commonly encountered within the queer community.<\/p>

Director Yeung profoundly presents to audiences the pressure and grief borne in daily life due to one\u2019s queer identity. While many are captivated by the fantasy of BL (Boys\u2019 Love), Ray Yeung\u2019s camera reveals the shadows beneath same-sex partnerships. All Shall Be Well has been praised as \u201cIf there is a film that could capture this same feeling of this mundane and yet world-shattering grief, it is this one.\u201d<\/p>

A Pioneer in Advancing Queer Cinema<\/strong><\/p>

Since 2000, Director Yeung has served as Executive Director of the Hong Kong Lesbian & Gay Film Festival, organizing the festival and promoting the development of local and international queer cinema for over two decades, creating a platform for sexual minorities to be seen and understood.<\/p>

Regardless of gender or orientation, who doesn’t dream of forever when beginning a serious relationship? No one enters love expecting it to end.<\/p>

Japanese films romanticise “dating with marriage in mind,” yet Hong Kong’s same-sex couples cannot even aspire to such dreams, denied not only marriage, but even partnership registration. This extends far beyond romantic ideals; it strikes at the heart of fundamental livelihood security.<\/p>

Death brings humanity’s deepest pain. Beyond overwhelming grief lies a maze of harsh realities: retrieving loved ones’ remains, arranging final ceremonies, navigating burial permits, settling estates. For legally recognised couples, one document opens every necessary door.<\/p>

For same-sex partners in Hong Kong? Proving their relationship becomes an ordeal. Even with a will in hand, surviving partners face complex legal battles over inheritance. Families often challenge what the law refuses to acknowledge.<\/p>

Death arrives without warning. Who plans for such a tragedy while immersed in love’s joy? Heterosexual couples gain automatic legal protection through a marriage ceremony. Same-sex couples must love while knowing they remain legally invisible.<\/p>

Beyond life’s final chapter, living together presents countless obstacles. In medical emergencies, can partners visit or make critical decisions? Can they designate organ donations to each other?<\/p>

Can working-class couples share medical vouchers in later years? If one faces imprisonment, do they receive spousal visitation rights?<\/p>

Can couples who want to live together jointly apply for public or subsidised housing? Can they apply together as partners to benefit from housing policies like the “Starter Homes Project for Hong Kong Residents”?<\/p>

Different government departments may impose different requirements for proving relationships. Without partnership registration frameworks, same-sex couples encounter administrative barriers at every turn. While individual policy changes help, they create inconsistent, privacy-invading obstacles.<\/p>
